BABY

A work-at-home Mother of twin baby boys.

Here’s a sneak peek into my life as a work-at-home Mother to twin baby boys.

I’m new to parenting, and neither the dad nor I expected my firstborn to be twins — much less prepared for it!  My initial thoughts were that having a baby is a transformational process; life-changing, per se. Being a new mum is one of the hardest things I had to cope with thus far: The demands of my children, massive weight gains, hormonal rage fits, the severe lack of sleep (this was absolutely the worst), and especially feeling desperate and trapped. But having a twin is transcendental, and I’d like to explain why with a simple clarification: Having twins does not double the trouble, but amplifies it exponentially (oh my god)

The Twin’s Daily Routine

Take a look at the daily schedule for me and my boys at about 8 weeks old – life is much easier when you get them on the same schedule of feeding approximately every 3 hours or so. Welcome to a world that revolves around scheduling, being organised and multi-tasking! But remember that babies are highly unpredictable, so if the day doesn’t go according to schedule, don’t worry too much about it. Get back on track when you can and cut yourself some much-needed slack along the way.

My Daily Routine

  • 4am-5am – one boy wakes up. Feed him, change him and put him back to sleep. Then wake up the second one and do the same thing. Crawl back into bed to try and get another 2-3 hours of sleep if I’m lucky.
  • 7am – get up while the boys are still asleep, and quickly, shower, have breakfast and check my emails for a few minutes.
  • 7:30am – the crying begins and the day starts. Feed both boys and try putting them down for a short nap again
  • 8am-9:30am – organise dinner for the evening, and attempt to do some work on my laptop. Vaguely clean up the house a little so that it doesn’t look like a bomb hit it.
  • 9:45am – the boys wake up.
  • 10am – noon. Give them a bath, feed them and lay them down to play on the activity mat.
  • 12 – 12:30pm – small feed and put the boys down for a nap. I have a quick sandwich lunch while replying to emails and have a lie down with the boys.
  • 3pm – everyone wakes up. Feed the boys again, and change them. Have a quick snack myself. Let the boys amuse themselves while I attempt to do a few minutes of work.
  • 4:45pm – put the twins down for another short nap.
  • 6pm – the twins wake up. Give them another quick bath and get them ready for bedtime.
  • 6:45pm – daddy comes home and spends some time with the boys while I go out for a little fresh air downstairs. If only the whole day was this easy.
  • 7:30pm – give the boys one more feed and put them back into bed.
  • 8:30pm – daddy and I have a quick dinner and catch up on the day’s events. I get ready for bed and check my emails again in bed, waiting for the boys to wake up for the last time that night.
  • 10pm – the boys start waking up again. Try and stretch the feeding to about 10:30pm, so that the next one might be around 2am if we’re lucky.
  • 10:30pm – go to sleep as soon as the boys are back in bed.
  • 1:45am-2am – one boy wakes up. Feed him, change him and put him back to sleep. Then wake up the second one and do the same thing. Go back to sleep exhausted, knowing they will be up in another 2-3 hours.
