By the time we had our twins, I already knew that about a week or so after babies are born, their skin gets dry and peels a little, especially on their toes. But something seemed a little off with one of my twins, Mia.
Although my three other kids had pretty typical skin types, Mia was experiencing something more extreme. Her skin began to feel very dry despite using moisturizer. It felt like alligator scales. Then random, circular red patches began to develop on different areas of her skin. She would even have recurring flare-ups that almost made her look like she had a black eye.
When I pointed this out to Mia’s pediatrician, he immediately diagnosed her with eczema and filled me in on products made specifically for babies skin with eczema moisturizers and skin care routines.
As Mia grew, her eczema stayed with her. I have found, more than anything else, that consistency is key. Moisturizing her skin at least once a day is one way that I am able to keep her eczema from flaring up. We only use very mild soaps on her skin, and keep her bath water at a warm-but-not-too-warm temperature.
On occasion, Mia has reacted to certain weather conditions and sunscreens even when it didn’t bother her twin sister at all. One time in particular, we were in Disneyworld on a very warm and humid day. We took all of the precautions necessary, including slathering her up with sunscreen (a brand we had not used before), we dressed her in light clothing, gave her lots of fluids, and constantly kept her in the shade.
Mia was happy the entire day and even had a little nap in the stroller. But as the day came to a close, I noticed some blotchy spots appearing on her face. Once we entered our air-conditioned room the red spots didn’t look as angry.
But when Mia woke up the next morning, our jaws dropped. She was covered head-to-toe with bright red blotchy spots. We were able to have a doctor look at her, and he told us that because Mia’s eczema makes her skin more sensitive and prone to allergic reactions, she had reacted to the heat and the new sunscreen.
Since then we have been very careful to only use products on her skin that are gentle and hypoallergenic. Some of my go-to reliable skin care products are Aveeno Baby Cleansing Therapy Moisturizing Wash and Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream. Not only do these products moisturize Mia’s dry skin, they also soothe itching and irritation. Also, whenever the weather is very hot and humid, we make sure Mia isn’t outside for too long.
If you find yourself in a similar situation with your baby, make sure you point it out to your child’s doctor so she can give you tips on how to treat your baby’s skin. Know that eczema can be a very unpredictable skin condition, and despite your best efforts, your child might still have a flare-up when least expected.
