Oh, that feeling that soars through you when you finally get your baby to eat after he’s been sick and barely even drinking his milk! In May, my 9-month-old went from bronchiolitis to RSV to teething with an ear infection, so I just lived this.
This was even our first time having to use a nebulizer…he was not a fan. Luckily, a friend from the BabyCenter community recommended I strap him in his car seat in our living room and try it that way. He was asleep in minutes.
Through all of this, I could barely get him to eat a thing. Even drinking milk was hard on him since his nose was so stuffy. Even after we suctioned his nose, he’d chug for a few seconds, pull the bottle back, breathe through his mouth, repeat. It was pitiful. One night, my normally boisterous young boy fell asleep while we were out to dinner. So unlike him.
Thankfully, on a sunny afternoon just two days later I poured some of the vibrant Plum Organics Purple Super Puffs onto his tray, and he scarfed them up, one after the other. I was elated! Not just happy that he was eating, but I knew he was eating whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Specifically, he was delighting in blueberry and purple sweet potato — ah, so that explains the purple!
It was so neat to watch him learn through this tactile self-feeding experience because I know that letting him play with his food he learns valuable skills and gains additional fine motor skills. On his first try grabbing the snack, he flung the puff into the air as if he were playing paper football. Soon, he realized that a puff would stick to his finger if he licked it first and then simply touched it. He lifted up his be-puffed finger and studied it, amazed that this snack was attached to him. Before it had a chance to fall off, he shoved it into his mouth.
Excited that he had his appetite back, I spun around to the pantry to pull out the Plum Organics Pumpkin Banana Little Yums teething wafers. It was worth a try.
Sure enough, he took one taste and then held it in his not-so-dexterous little hands and gnawed on it until there was just a little nub of the teether left. Unlike other teething snacks we’ve tried, there wasn’t a crumb on his face. And I have to admit, the Italian in me loves that these wafers were baked in Italy.
One thing that has been really important to me with all three of my babies is getting them to taste all the wonderful flavors that exist in the world — from ordinary baby foods like green peas to exotic fruits and vegetables, curry, and cumin.
Knock on wood, it looks like he’s finally in the clear and all better! Just Saturday night, between baby bites of Victoria’s Filet Mignon at Outback on what was “date night” for my hubby and I (in other words, the big brothers were at Grandma and Grandpa’s), he savored the Blueberry and Fig Little Yums.
I’m so happy to know I have nutritious snacks for my baby’s little tastebuds that are made to dissolve so we can both be confident in diving into nature’s amazing flavors!
Happy at the park because he’s got his snack!
Yum!
Trying to grab these puffs then realizes they stick to his fingers!
