I was going to share a list of birthday party favors NOT to give away at your next party, but wow is that list long! Most moms agree to just say NO to party favors!
With that said, kids really love party favors, even if only for 3.2886 seconds. I am master of few things, but finding the best party favors that kids and parents both will love is my specialty. Here are a few ideas for your child’s next birthday party.
9 mom-approved cheap birthday party favors:
1. A balloon
Balloons are a win/win for so many reasons. They make a great decoration during a party, and kids of all ages love balloons (although BabyCenter doesn’t recommend balloons for children under age 4 or 5, since they can be a serious choking hazard). They also won’t junk up your house because POOF! they disappear after a couple of days. Target sells these adorable glow in the dark balloons my children just adore (Target, $9.99).
2. A book
Whether your party guests are 5 months or 5 years old, a book is sure to be a hit! The Litttle Golden Book series has lots of books under $4. Seen here: Cinderella (Amazon, $3.48)
3. Bubbles
I just love bubbles. For some reason the cheaper the bubbles, the better they work in our experience. Small Bubble Bottle Wands (Oriental Trading, $11.99/dozen)
4. Toothbrush
Most parties have cake and maybe candy too. Why not hand out a toothbrush in a fun color or character? Reach Kids Toothbrush (Target, $2.79/2)
5. Coloring book & crayons
This is a great way to get your kids to leave a party. Hand them a coloring book and crayons and send them on their way. A new box of crayons is always special. Bulk Buy Crayola Crayons 8/pk (Amazon, $9.20/12 sets)
6. Food
My friend hosted a Snow White-themed party and handed out bright red apples for the party favor. Healthy snack to go? Yes, please.
7. Capes
Amazon periodically has these gorgeous silky capes on sale in lots of colors. We have a collection of maybe 10 of these from various birthday parties which makes it extra fun to play superheroes during a playdate. Superhero capes (Amazon, $19.99/set of 5)
8. Beach pail & shovel
Summer is coming! We never have enough beach tools, especially a classic pail and shovel. You can usually find these for a dollar and you can personalize them with any permanent marker. Sand pail and shovel (Dollar Tree, $48/case of 48)
9. Craft made at the party
I love parties that incorporate a craft the kids can make at the party and then take home. Melissa & Doug Scratch Art Key Chain (Amazon, $4.99/set of 6)
In my opinion no birthday party needs a favor, but I am also of the philosophy that if you thank someone in person for a gift there is no need for you to send a thank you note. That’s a story for another day though.
