When the world went into lockdown in early 2020, teachers everywhere rose to the occasion and found brilliant ways to make remote learning work!
Jason Erdreich, a middle school teacher in New Jersey, went a step further by borrowing 3D printers from his school to keep his community safe!

Jason, a self-proclaimed “DIY maker/tinkerer,” teaches robotics, manufacturing, and woodworking and loves coming up with new designs any chance he can get. It was his passion for creating that inspired him to spend his time in quarantine developing personal protective equipment to keep others safe.
He hooked up a grand total of 15 3D printers in his living room to manufacture the equipment as quickly as possible and then got to work!
Over the course of several months, he designed the printed PPE, shared the design with his students and fellow teachers, and spent hours running his machines at home every day. Before long, he and his crew had printed more than 12,000 pieces of PPE for frontline workers, nursing homes, and hospitals!

So when his wife Cara found out about the “Mazda Heroes: Honoring The Human Spirit” program, she knew she had to nominate Jason to become one of 50 Mazda Heroes! After all, in her words, he was “compassionate and generous in a time when people were afraid.”
We’re not at all surprised that Jason won the prestigious title, but it still came as a huge shock to him! “I was speechless,” he said. “I mean I never could have envisioned something like this happening to me, let alone for something I did.”
Not only did he get the credit he deserves, but he also received a brand new 100th anniversary special edition Mazda MX-5 Miata!

“I’m not really one for the spotlight, but this has been a truly incredible experience,” he told CNN. “I feel very fortunate, and I am endlessly appreciative to my colleagues, students, administrators, community members, and my wife that really helped make all of the PPE in the thick of the pandemic, and even more so for the frontline workers we were making the PPE for.”
Best of all, he did everything out of the goodness of his heart without expecting anything in return! It’s hard to imagine a more deserving community hero!
