Hilary Duff is known for being an actress, a singer-songwriter, an author, and of course, a mom. She’s come a long way since her teen idol days on Lizzie McGuire (can you believe it’s been 15 years since it first aired?!) and we’re definitely still crushing on her.
Most recently, Duff has released a new album, titled Breathe In. Breathe Out, and is starring in the hit show Younger. Although she split from her husband, hockey player Mike Comrie, the two are raising their adorable blue-eyed son Luca, 3, together.
For this week’s Mom Crush Monday, we rounded up Duff’s take on parenting in the public eye, body image, and more.
On potty training Luca …
Hilary Duff discussed the experience with E! News saying:
“He potty trained really easily. I was so lucky. I didn’t push it. I just waited until he started to show an interest in it and kind of told him that his older cooler cousins are all potty trained. And it worked! He’s been a really easy kid so far. He can have his moments, for sure, but I want him to have a strong personality. It’ll serve him right some day.”
On wearing fabulous shoes …
On rainy days in Los Angeles …
On doing something nice for yourself …
On feeling reassured as a mom …
Duff opened up to Parents.com saying:
“I have days where hearing someone say, ‘I’m so proud of you,’ or, ‘Look at the wonderful mother you are’ can just make me cry — you know? Because you need to hear it so bad, because as a mom you’re stressed and you give so much of yourself away. Of course you’d do anything for your children, but hearing that reassurance can just mean the world.”
On what she feels when she looks at her son …
On how she spends her vacation …
On dipping into her son’s candy stash …
On being judged by other parents …
Duff told Parents.com:
“I just think that there’s so much judgment in the world, whether it’s coming from women in general or from men onto women — it’s a lot. And when it comes to being a mom, I wish everyone could band together and realize that everyone has different beliefs, different styles, and different things that work for them and their family.”
On spending time with her mom …
On playtime with Luca …
On waking up early …
On her own body image ...
Duff opened up to Elle saying:
“I just tell myself, ‘I’m 5’2″, I’m really fit, killing it in the gym, and doing crazy things.’ I love to work out, but I’m just not that concerned with being the skinniest person. I’m not a model; I’m an actress. I always feel like I’m in the five to ten pound struggle, but my life is so busy. I’m just not that concerned, really. I’m normal and I’m perfectly happy being that way.”
On counting calories …
On raising a little gentleman …
On struggling with LEGOs …
On raising a child in the public eye …
Duff explained her struggle to Yahoo Parents saying:
“Being in the public eye, I get photographed almost every day or every other day and I’m often with my child. When he was 2, well that’s when children learn to throw tantrums. So I can’t help it if someone’s taking a picture when I’m taking him to get a haircut — and he hates haircuts and he doesn’t like the photographers and throws a tantrum and then there’s a headline: ‘Can’t Control Her Child!’”
On how she spends a sick day …
On sister bonding …
On how she dealt with her body after baby …
Duff revealed how she really felt to Yahoo Parenting saying:
“We are a normal family with not-so-normal jobs, not-so-normal upbringings. But we have family dinner every Sunday, and our get-togethers always revolve around food. We love to work out and be healthy and lead good lives. But Haylie and I had the outlook, when we had our babies, we don’t need to race to the gym. We’d rather use that time for bonding with our kids. As for how we deal with all the public attention, we try to tune it out. You can’t let it affect you. Our world is so obsessed with weight and bodies now, but I’m happy the way I am.”
On Luca spendig time with his cousin Ryan …
On paying tribute to Lizzie McGuire …
On the importance of having fun …
Duff told Elle:
“I live the way I want and do the things I want. I obviously try to be respectful of myself and my son and my family. I do care what people think. But I’m 27, and I know that it’s important to have fun.”
