There’s no need to restrict yourself to blah baby gear if what you want are brilliant and sophisticated colors, specialty fabrics, and thoughtful design. Here are some new-and-lovely designs to feast your eyes on.
Baby Trend Hybrid LX 3-in-1 Car Seat: It’s not often that bargain brands come in such high-style options, but Baby Trend has really splashed out with its latest fabric choices. Clockwise from top right: Mosaic, Lacie, Comic Pop, and Ahoy, all available at the same low price point. This car seat is called a “3-in-1” because it functions in 3 modes: as a forward-facing car seat with a harness (like a convertible, except this seat can’t be used rear-facing), or a high-backed booster or backless that uses your car’s seatbelt. (Target, $119.99)
Maxi-Cosi City Motif Collection: If big cities are your thing, this stunning Maxi-Cosi treatment probably will be too. With charming line drawings of buildings and street scenes and gleaming copper accents, the Mico Max 30 infant seat and the Pria 85 convertible take on an undeniable sophistication. (Mico Max 30, $269.95, Pria 85, $349.95)
Quinny Zapp Xtra South Beach Limited Edition Strollers: Strollers are frequently found in brights: crimson red, cobalt blue, daffodil yellow. Cool pastels are tougher to find. But the lightweight, compact Quinny Zapp Xtra comes in two Florida-friendly shades — aqua and a flamingo-pink — that will really stand out at the playground. (Blue, and Pink, each $199.99)
Elle Baby Journey Stroller: Speaking of beautiful pastels, little-known stroller maker Elle Baby came out with a real beaut. The Journey’s seat converts from a pram (for newborns) to a traditional stroller seat, and the included muff keeps riders warm on wintry walks. (Ellebaby, $299.99)
Mountain Buggy Year of the Rooster strollers and color packs: Mountain Buggy continues its Chinese zodiac special-edition fabric series with Year of the Rooster designs. You can buy the Nano or Swift in Year of the Rooster editions — or if you already have either of the strollers with different fabrics, you can buy “color packs” to replace your current fabric with roosterwear. (Year of the Rooster Swift, $449.99; Nano, $249.99; Swift Color Pack, $99.99; Nano Color Pack, $99.99)
GB Maris and Day Dream Collection: Made by the stroller company famous for the folds-into-a-backpack Pockit, the reversible-seat Maris now comes in absolutely gorgeous fabrics and colors like this glowing purple (GB calls the color Posh Pink) and Day Dream with a canopy covered with fluttering black foliage that looks like the satanic crib they kept Rosemary’s Baby in! Oooh! The matching carrycot and Idan car seats both work with the Maris, and GB also offers Day Dream footmuffs, diaper bags, and baby blankets for the goth mom in your life. (GB Maris in Posh Pink, $699.99, GB Maris Baby Carry Cot in Posh Pink, $279.99, GB Idan Infant Car Seat in Posh Pink, $359.99; Day Dream Collection prices and release date TBA)
Evenflo Sonus: Evenflo is one of our favorite makers of feature-rich-yet-value-priced car seats, and the Sonus is a shining new example of why we love them. The Sonus holds kids rear-facing to 40 pounds and 40 inches and forward-facing to 50 pounds and 50 inches, so it’s great for kids on the bigger side (that’s about the size of your average 7-year-old, to give you some context). It’s nicely padded. It’s narrow enough at 19 inches to fit 3-across in many vehicles. And just look at these beautiful designs. Quite a seat for under 80 bucks. (Evenflo, $80)
